I am passionate about Africa, governance, social change and building solutions that respond to real world challenges.
For more than a decade, I have devoted my career and resources to understanding systemic issues confronting communities and public institutions, translating insights into practical solutions and developing context-driven interventions that advance sustainable development and improve lives.
About
Michael Edem-Duke is a solutions journalist, public policy strategist, and development consultant whose work sits at the intersection of governance, media, and social impact. He is committed to designing solutions that strengthen public systems, mobilise citizen participation, and improve development outcomes across Africa.
He is the Founder and President of Citizen Journalists Network (CJN Africa), a civic media and social impact platform dedicated to documenting social challenges and developing practical interventions informed by firsthand insights from affected communities and a practical understanding of issues on the ground. Through CJN Africa, he has championed initiatives that transform citizen-led storytelling into tangible solutions that strengthen communities, institutions, and systems.
Over the years, his work has spanned public policy, governance, strategic communications, humanitarian action, community development and civic engagement. He has led and supported initiatives in advocacy, community healthcare, rural electrification, vocational skills development, water and sanitation, social entrepreneurship, youth empowerment, and humanitarian response. Through various interventions and campaigns, he has contributed to projects that have impacted lives and communities across Nigeria.
Passionate about shaping conversations that influence policy and development outcomes, Michael regularly contributes to public discourse through speaking engagements, stakeholder dialogues, media interventions, and civic initiatives. He has moderated and spoken at high-level engagements involving government institutions, development partners, civil society organisations, and private sector stakeholders on issues relating to governance, digital transformation, leadership, public policy, and sustainable development.
Driven by the belief that practical leadership is most meaningful when it moves beyond ideas, commentary and advocacy into action, Michael has sought to contribute not only to public discourse but also to the democratic process itself. During Nigeria's 2023 general elections, he contested for the House of Representatives seat, seeking to represent the Akpabuyo, Bakassi, and Calabar South Federal Constituency of Cross River State, offering a forward-thinking and solutions-oriented vision for leadership, citizen representation, and community development.
Michael is a Certified Management Consultant (CMC) with expertise in Leadership and Corporate Governance, Community Development, and Media Communications. A graduate of Linguistics from the University of Abuja, he graduated at the top of his class and has since received numerous national and international recognitions for his contributions to leadership, social development, and media. These include the NextGen Ideators Award and the Nigerian Youth Icon for Impact in Social Development and Media Independence.
In recognition of his contributions to leadership and governance, he received invitations in 2021 for honorary doctoral recognition from Commonwealth University and London Graduate School. In 2022, he received a further invitation for the award of Doctor of Science (D.Sc. Hons) in Leadership and Corporate Governance from the European-American University.
He is driven by the conviction that Africa's transformation will not be realised through imported ideas, but through homegrown solutions grounded in local realities, shaped by the lived experiences of its people, and informed by a deep understanding of the challenges confronting communities and institutions. He believes that sustainable progress requires strong institutions, empowered citizens, and visionary leadership capable of building resilient systems that address complex challenges while expanding opportunities for generations to come.
An accomplished intellectual, public speaker, and development practitioner, Michael remains committed to advancing governance, driving social transformation, and building solutions that respond to real-world challenges, with an enduring passion for Africa's future.
