BACKGROUND
Michael Edem-Duke Moderates Conversations on International Conference on Prisoner Justice, 2023
"The true measure of a justice system lies not only in how it protects society, but also in how it preserves the dignity and humanity of those within its care."
— Michael Edem-Duke

SOLUTION
One of the enduring convictions that has shaped my work in social development and humanitarian advocacy is the belief that justice must remain rooted in human dignity and the protection of society's most vulnerable populations.
It was therefore a privilege to be invited to moderate conversations at the 2023 International Conference on Prisoner Justice, hosted by Earthspring International in collaboration with the Vincentian International Network for Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation (VIN-JPIC), Africa and Madagascar, and the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS).
Bringing together distinguished legal practitioners, correctional experts, humanitarian actors, and stakeholders working within international criminal justice systems to examine pressing challenges and emerging opportunities for strengthening prisoner justice frameworks, particularly within the Nigerian context, under the theme: "Enhancing Global Response for Prisoners' Justice"
I had the distinct privilege of both moderating conversations as the Anchor of the Panel Discussion, and contributing as a Panelist, contributing perspectives drawn from my work in civic engagement, humanitarian development, and social justice advocacy. Together with seasoned legal professionals and humanitarian leaders, we explored critical issues surrounding access to justice, rehabilitation, institutional reforms, and the importance of building correctional systems that uphold human dignity while promoting societal reintegration.
The conversations underscored the need for collaborative approaches that bring together policymakers, correctional institutions, civil society actors, and humanitarian organizations in shaping more responsive and humane justice systems.
I remain grateful to the conveners, Rev. Fr. Victor Nyoroh, CM, Esq., National Chaplain of the Nigerian Correctional Service and Africa Representative for Prison Affairs at VIN-JPIC, and to Mr. Jim Claffey, International Coordinator of VIN-JPIC at the United Nations Desk in Geneva, for providing a platform that fostered meaningful dialogue and cross-sector collaboration around issues of global prisoner justice.
Recognition for Contributions to Social Justice and Humanitarian Development
A particularly humbling moment at the conference was being honoured with a Certificate of Recognition in appreciation of my contributions to social justice and humanitarian work. The award was presented on behalf of the Comptroller General of the Nigerian Correctional Service by Deputy Comptroller General Abdullahi Magaji, mni, FCA, who represented the Service at the event.
This recognition reflects not only a personal milestone, but also the growing importance of collaborative leadership and cross-sector engagement in addressing complex social challenges, especially in areas of strengthening institutions, and creating systems that serve people with dignity and compassion.
Building Systems. Advancing Justice. Creating Impact.
I believe that sustainable change requires more than advocacy – it demands dialogue, partnerships, and the courage to bring diverse stakeholders together around shared solutions. As Africa continues to confront evolving challenges in governance and justice administration, forums such as these remain indispensable for strengthening institutions and promoting a more humane and inclusive society.
